Junior to Senior
From "surgical procedures", things really start to go fast and get serious. Surgical technology starts to show it's depth. your'e considerd juniors, and you know by now if this is something that you really want to do. Your'e at the halfway point, and when you come back from clinical, it's almost all downhill from there.

Surgical Procedures This class will take you thru the different type of surgeries from head to toe and everything in between! Anatomy and physiology pops up again, so if you slept in Dr. Joseph's class and managed to slip thru the cracks....you are gonna be lost! it's going to be like listening to a foreign language! LOL. This class put's you back into hardcore studying mode, there's a block test every week! Dr. Fahlsing is a unique, strangely funny guy, and a cool artist. His handouts are very valuable and interesting. He took time to write out everything we need, it's like having a mini reference library....THANKS DR FAHLSING!

Clinical Rotation After Dr. Fahlsing's class, your'e gonna be ready to get out of the classroom for a month! During clinical, you go to your assigned hospital and learn about sterilization, cleaning, washing, and setting up instrument trays. Your memory will be refreshed on the instruments you learned in "intro to surgical" technology, and you will learn many new instruments that you did not learn in class. For some people, it's their first time working in a hospital enviroment, so they get a chance to get adjusted to being in a hospital setting. (NOTE) My advice is during your clinical rotation, continue to review everything, because when you come back you'll be needing it!

Pre Mock (Review with Connie) When you come back, there's a 2 week review with Connie of everything! she'll drill you, give you writing assignments, and be real tough on you just to make you better. She'll bring up things that you wouldn't think she would question you on and when you answer, she'll question you on your answer! You will be forced to use your brain and think. You will be considered a senior class, and she will expect you to act like one, and think like one. There's also a BIG test before you go on to "mock", and if youv'e been reviewing, you should come thru with flying colors.

Mock Surgery This is what it's all about! By this time, your class will have been divided into 2 groups (if it's a big class) so hopefully everyone in the class get's along with each other because TEAMWORK will play a big part of mock surgery. You might have someone on you team you don't really care for, but you still have to work together. This is where everything comes together. You will refine your aseptic technique, back table set up, gowning and gloving, passing, counting, everything! You will be expected to research your case, know the complications, the surgeon's role, circulator role, and ansthesiologist role. All of this is to prepare us for our externship rotations. Even at this stage, there will be some that slipped thru the cracks and managed to stay in the program, BUT you will be able to see those that will be good techs and those that probally won't make it in a hospital. And those that just try to get by.... will not be allowed to go to externship if the instructor feels that they are not ready. Stay focused and keep good attendance, because if you dont have good attendance, it can be difficult for the school to place you at choice hospitals. My class was told "You get out of mock what you put into mock" and it's true.
